Basics of web typography

In addition to graphics, choosing the correct form of the text is one of the most important aspects of design independent on the amount of textual information.

In order to get the necessary typography for your site, let us first clarify the meaning of several key terms. The first important set of keywords is defined by concepts of “font” and “typeface”.

Font is a set of symbols of certain size and design. Typeface is a set of fonts in different styles and size, united by a common style of execution. As you can see, the font is a narrower concept.

There are also terms such as “weight” and “kerning”. Font “weight” determines the degree of thickness of the lines in the face. By “kerning” the change of spacing between letters, depending on their shape is meant.

Violation of norms

It is quite reasonable to think over creating new fonts. Today there are hundreds of fonts, but a variety of operating systems offer their own packages. And only a few of the fonts are included in these packages. If you choose a font that is missing in customer’s system, the font may not be available and it’ll be replaced by a default one. For these reasons, it is recommended to use basic fonts. But in case default font cannot fully express designer’s imagination, and you need a special font, then turn your special font into an image and upload it to your site.

Choosing the correct font

Different typefaces can have a different impact on the mood of readers. As a rule, serif fonts are better to be used for printed materials. Serifs help to create a space between the letters, as well as to separate one character from another. Serif fonts usually convey respect, intelligence and professionalism.

For web pages fonts without serif are recommended. Low resolution screen is likely to make serifs look blurred and hardly discernible. Fonts without serif usually express a sense of rationality, style, youth and modernity.

Informational content

Design should complement your information. The user does not have to figure out exactly what the designer had in mind. Wrong choice of typography can contribute to the misconception about the company and its services. For business project design mainly traditional smooth fonts are to be applied.

Placement and size

For effective web design it is very important to consider text size and the place where the text should be placed. No one wants to strain eyes to read the information on the website or watch the incredibly huge words so here balance is the key to a good design. The first step is to figure out what information will be more important.

Generally words that need more attention are bigger in size. Or vice versa, they should be slightly smaller. All depends on importance. In other words, a hierarchy of words is to be created.

As for the placement of text, try to keep it balanced without throwing parts of the text at the four corners. This can greatly distract users.

Color

This is one of the easiest aspects – choosing the color which will highlight the text in the background at the same time keeping it readable.

Here contrasting colors, and the use of effects such as strokes and glows may come for help. This will make the site more attractive and easier to read.
