Creating User-Friendly Websites: Buttons vs Text Links

Today let’s talk about what is better to use: buttons or links on the site? Of course, it all depends on the site, in some cases it is better to use buttons, whereas some cases require the use of links. Web-designer just has to choose what will best suit for the development of a specific project.

So let’s see which functions each of them performs and what is the difference between them.

Buttons on the site

With the help of graphic design of buttons you can create a very nice menu. In addition, the use of buttons can make the site more informative than links. You can draw anything, give the buttons an effect of shimmering color, or any other animation, make clickable titles and much more.

Cons of graphic buttons:
Creating a button. The creation of beautiful buttons can take a very long time. If you make an animated button, then all this will take even more time. But if the designer is a professional, difficulties will hardly occur.

Loading. If the button weighs too much, the page will load slowly at times. Of course here we must take into account not only the weight of the buttons, but also the design of the site. It happens that all navigation is made of images, then it is possible that the user will see the text while the page has not been drawn yet, and the user will go away without even appreciating your creation.

Turned off graphic. Many users turn off graphics in browsers, trying not to spend time and traffic, which means that they won’t see the navigation at all.

Small buttons. On small buttons fonts are respectively small as well which is not so good.

Indexing. The text on the button is not indexed by search engines. The only thing you to do is using attribute Alt.

Text links on the site

These links are intended to ensure that pages are linked to each other. Hyperlinks are created using simple HTML-tags. When loading the text on the page, links load very easily and quickly.

Links work in all browsers and at all resolutions equally. In contrast to the graphic buttons they are indexed by search engines.

Cons of text links:
Beauty. Of course the very first minus is that a link is not a graphical button, so here your artistic talents won”t be useful.

Scaling. When increasing or decreasing the size of the screen the font may become vague and difficult to read.

Fitness. Nicely done button can have a much more effective look than the ordinary link which sometimes may not be even noticed.

Of course you can make a design using links. It is not considered a terrible thing, if you decide to do so. On the contrary, there are many beautiful patterns where links are usually used.

Graphic buttons bring to freedom for creativity, whereas regular links are more flexible and easily customizable.
