Meta Tags: Basics you Need to Know

In addition to text and graphics every web page contains HTML-code or, in other words, a set of tags that is invisible to the user. Tags are special HTML commands, which inform the browser about individual page elements (text, images, tables, lines). Web browser, in its turn, uses this information to display the page elements in this order and in accordance with these properties.

Tag is indicated by one or more English words that explain its purpose. Tags are written as follows:

… text(simplified variant), whereis an “open” tag andis the “closing” one. Opening and closing tags are also called containers.

Meta tags

With this type of tags information is inserted into the HTML-code about content of the site, its owner, the author of the design. The data are displayed in the section «description», which is the object of attention of search engines. It is not surprising that robots first of all focus on meta-tags and based on the acquired information they display the site in search results. Therefore, it is important to add to the source code not only the description of the resource, but key words as well:

Adding pages to favorites

To add favorite web resource to the folder “Favorites”, use the following code:

<a href=”javascript:window.external.AddFavorite (‘http://page address,’page description’)”> Add to Favorites </ A>

Setting your home page

Usually home pages are set by search engines or directories, so as to quickly find necessary information. However, a link to set the home page may be present on an ordinary site as well. Below is the required html-code.

<head>
<title> JavaScript. Establishing a start page </ title>
</ head>
<body>
<a href=”#” onClick=”this.style.behavior=’url(#default#homepage)’;this.setHomePage(‘http://); return false;”> Make home page </ a>
</ body>
</ html>
