Responsive web design and how it differs from the adaptive one

Modern technology is evolving at an extremely rapid pace. Today we have the opportunity to surf Internet not only from a desktop computer, laptop and phone , but also from a home theater and even car navigator! Development of web – site design , as well as web applications , does not have time to adapt to these changes . And here is why making the site easy to appear on any screen resolution becomes a challenge for many web site developers.

Among various solutions, an interesting one was the creation of responsive web design aimed to solve some important problems.

Responsive Web Design is an approach to the creation of the site, which involves the design and development according to the screen resolution that is used, its orientation and platform. In other words, the website should be based on those technologies that automatically would react to user preferences. In practice responsive web design is a combination of rubber images, including video clips, rubber layout and Media Queries, which, in fact, are responsible for the adaptation of the layout to the size of the user screen ,and through CSS3 this resolution is set, and the result is determined.

This approach was first proposed in the early 2009 by Ethan Marcotte, who later published a book “Responsive Web Design”.

However, such decision of creating a site arises a lot of contradictory opinions among coders and designers. In particular, they highlight the following pitfalls of responsive web design :

1. From the point of view of design problems with the optimization of content location occur: the order of information units , widgets , media , and design in general
2. Layout issues arise because of the growth of the code
3. Costs of resources and bandwidth increase while reducing image browser
4. Media Queries do not perform so well while displaying various options of images

The main principle of responsive design is Mobile First – that is, first of all mobile version of the website is developed, and then it is extended by additions of other features.

In fact, responsive web design is part of adaptive web design , since it implies only work with the layout of the page: media queries , flexible images, and layout . In contrast to the responsive web design, adaptive one involves a bit more than that. In particular, there is a separate concept of “adaptive layout ” – a layout made by combination of horizontal sizes of the same width. Therefore, an adaptive layout can be a form of responsive web site design. That is, in the end adaptive web design is responsive web design with progressive improvements.
