Social Network Popularity Around the World

YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and other social networks allow users to express their views without any barriers and constraints. In some countries, including USA, Russia and China, increase in restrictions on the Internet leads to the fact that people rush into social networks for free communication.

USA is currently ranked secons in the top ten countries where social networks are most popular. Recently a law was adopted that allows the government to shut down any site with information harmful to children or with extreme content. The latter restriction arises great concern to the advocates of freedom of speech, as the wording of the law is extremely vague, and authorities can use this law as a tool to close the opposition websites.

Over the last year many people in China began using Weibo microblogs (Chinese equivalent of Twitter) to bypass censorship. Internet censors promptly began to filter new words or phrases. During the XVIII Congress in November 2012 Chinese users were not so much active because of tightening of censorship.

Social networks around the world have become the most popular platform for online communication.

At the moment social networks are available for 82% of Internet users. According to the research center Pew, now Britain is a leader in the number of users of social networks.

Here is the top ten countries in which social networks are mostly popular:

  • United Kingdom
  • USA
  • Russia
  • Czech Republic
  • Spain
  • Poland
  • Brazil
  • France
  • Italy
  • Turkey

We can surely say that social media are in the heart of the world evolutionary process, regardless of whether the thing is about the defense of freedom of speech, the use of social networks as a tool for business development, information on world news or just for communicating with friends.
