Tips for Web Design Process Optimization

Many people know and understand that Photoshop is not ideal for website design, but a lot of designers continue to use it, partly because it comes with set of functions. There is no ideal tool, and perhaps it’s not such a bad idea to consider some of the ways designers can optimize their work process.

Why use Photoshop?

You probably will not be surprised if I say that Photoshop and Illustrator are the applications that most designers know the best and feel most comfortable using. Some people prefer Fireworks for web design. However, there are things that are not possible to do with Fireworks or other tool. So there is no need to go back and forth. It’s better to stick with Photoshop.

Design with Photoshop or browser?

Today, as CSS3 becomes more popular, some people prefer to design in the browser. I agree that at some point, when the basic design is fully prepared and determined, you can go straight to the code, and use the browser. But the creative part should be made in applications such as Photoshop. This way web designers will be able to create, experiment with shapes, draw, move things around, change the color, gradient, effects, etc. So optimize your design using Photoshop.

Optimizing Photoshop workspace

In Photoshop CS5 you have several options for organizing the workspace that can be found in the top right corner of the application bar.
You can customize the panels and palettes as you want, from the workspace option “Design”, and save the workspace for future work.
Designers who work with both print and the Web, will have to create workspace for both.

Use Shape Layers

In order to make your design as flexible as possible, you can use Shape Layers, because they can be scaled. You can arrange all of my icons, buttons, backgrounds, illustrative graphics either via Smart Objects in Illustrator, or Shape Layers. Thus, the design is scalable for different screens.

Use Smart Objects

One of the advantages of Photoshop is Smart Objects. Smart Objects preserve the original image content with all its original characteristics, enabling editing layer without damage to them. This is the perfect way to make designs more flexible.
Create a set of custom styles

Always keep a special style sheet as a separate file in the folder of the project. During the process, when you add new styles, you can save them. Thus every time you work on a project, you can load the styles palette of this particular project.

These tips are useful for optimizing, and that they will help to improve your work in Photoshop.
